Overhaul update

We start today’s report in the dark cavern that is the smokebox. All twenty-one
superheater elements are in, as are both main steam pipes. The cover is off the superheater header
and the front end of the regulator rod can just be made out inside.

The rod being inserted earlier in the day. It has to be aligned to pass through a
number of inaccessible holes on its way to the firebox backplate.

At which end it protrudes to accept the regulator lever. John made many trips from
one end of the engine to the other to ensure that movement of the regulator valve followed that of
the lever. Note that the front spectacle plate has been fitted. Visible through it, the SVR painting
team is work on the firebox side.

While in the cab, the opportunity was taken to look into the firebox, where the
front, rocking section of the grate was installed. Again, the SVR staff were going to great lengths to
ensure full movement in the cab was matched by the correct movement of the grate.

The SMF working party installed more elements of the floorboards. These had been
cut to size many years ago and avoided various pipes and rods which passed through; during the
overhaul these were often changed and relocated, so various modifications had to be made on the
spot.

And this is where it will go. There is another piece of cladding sheet to cover the
insulation first.

The blastpipe and chimney await their turn. They take up a lot of space in the
smokebox and make working difficult, so will have to wait. The pole protruding upwards is to align
the two once in.

Coming on great guys.
Looking forward to her pounding up the valley once more.
Not be long now before she’s back doing her stuff on SVR metals.
